Businesses are such an important part of the culture of American life. Whether you are a business owner or are a passionate supporter of our local Wisconsin businesses, they are vital to our community.
Business owners have so much on their plates, so when disaster strikes, it can be detrimental to their livelihoods.
In fact, the cost to repair damage from natural disasters has been increasing over the last five years in the United States. The NCEI reported recently that our country is suffering an average of $153 billion worth of damage annually, which is a substantial increase when compared to past years’ trends.
Just recently, we suffered damage to our area when severe weather ripped through our counties. Damage was found near the Whitetail Golf Course when an EF-1 tornado left a six-mile stretch of damage in its wake.
If you are a business owner in central Wisconsin, we outline a few threats to your business below with some tips on how to minimize or avoid extensive damage.
Water or moisture damage is a constant underlying threat to businesses everywhere. Even the most unsuspecting things can cause impressive amounts of damage.
A small leak or a faulty seal on a window can slowly create a large problem. The larger the issue becomes, the more costly it becomes to your business.
If your building or property is located in an area that is prone to flooding, the excess water can seep in through doors and under window panes. It can even compromise the very foundational structure of your building. If you haven’t already, consider grading your property to help encourage water or excessive rainfall to flow away from your business.
Storms can cause all kinds of destruction to your business. Severe weather can rip off siding and signage, break windows and destroy your products. Even minor storms can cause power outages. If your business relies on power or refrigeration on a daily basis, the lack of electricity can be detrimental.
Sometimes all it takes is high winds over 100 mph to cause excessive damage. Wind alone can rip apart walls, upend trucks and freight and throw trees and debris into your storefront windows.
Consider reinforcing your roof or adding storm-protective window coverings where appropriate to your business to add an additional protective layer in case of strong storms.
When closing your business for any length of time due to water or storm damage isn’t an option, that’s where we come in.
