Fireproofing Your Business: Essential Steps for Creating a Fire Safety Plan | SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties

10/15/2024 (Permalink)

Fire sprinkler activated, spraying water to extinguish flames below Protect your business with a safety plan! Contact SERVPRO® for expert guidance on fire prevention and ensure your employees and property stay safe.

In the unpredictable world of business, fire safety should never be an afterthought. Fires can cause irreversible damage, jeopardizing not only property but also the well-being of your employees and customers. A comprehensive fire safety plan is vital for protecting your business from potential threats. Here’s how to establish a robust fire safety strategy tailored to your organization.

Identifying Risks in Your Environment

The foundation of an effective fire safety plan starts with identifying potential risks in your business environment. Conduct a thorough assessment of your premises to pinpoint areas that may pose fire hazards. Pay special attention to locations where flammable materials are stored, such as cleaning supplies, paper products, or outdated equipment.

Consider your building’s layout as well. Cluttered workspaces can hinder escape routes and increase fire risks. In addition to assessing physical hazards, evaluate the fire safety equipment at your disposal. Are your fire extinguishers accessible and in good condition? Are smoke alarms and sprinkler systems operational? Understanding your risks and resources will enable you to create a plan that addresses your unique needs effectively.

Crafting a Clear Evacuation Plan

After assessing potential risks, the next step is to develop a clear evacuation plan. Designate primary and secondary escape routes and ensure they are easily accessible and well-marked. Regularly review these routes with your employees to ensure everyone knows how to exit safely in case of an emergency.

Take into account the diverse needs of your workforce. Employees with disabilities may require additional assistance during an evacuation, so establishing a buddy system can facilitate this process. It’s essential to make your evacuation plan part of your company culture, integrating it into onboarding procedures and holding regular drills to practice and reinforce these safety measures.

Prioritizing Training and Open Communication

The final element of your fire safety plan involves ongoing training and effective communication. Schedule regular training sessions that educate employees about fire prevention, the proper use of fire extinguishers, and the protocols for reporting a fire. Empowering your team with knowledge can enhance their confidence and response time in an emergency.

Moreover, create a clear communication channel for reporting potential fire hazards. Encourage employees to remain vigilant and proactive in identifying risks, as their input can help prevent fires before they start. A well-informed workforce is one of the strongest defenses against fire-related incidents.

Developing a fire safety plan is a crucial investment in your business’s future, ensuring the safety of your employees and protecting your assets. By identifying risks, crafting a solid evacuation strategy, and prioritizing training and communication, you can cultivate a culture of safety in your organization.

At SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties, we’re committed to helping businesses safeguard their operations. If you have questions about fire safety or need assistance in developing a fire safety plan, reach out to us.

Preparing Commercial Properties For Fall Weather | SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties

8/15/2024 (Permalink)

bright orange and yellow fall foliage Preparing your commercial property for Fall is easy with these helpful tips and tricks from SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties!

As fall approaches, commercial property owners in our community must prioritize preparations to safeguard their buildings from potential storm damage. Taking proactive steps now can mitigate risks and ensure your property remains secure and operational during adverse weather conditions typical of the fall season.

Roof Maintenance

Maintaining the integrity of your roof and exterior is paramount in defending against storm damage. Start by conducting a thorough inspection of the roof for signs of wear, such as loose shingles or areas susceptible to leaks. Promptly addressing any issues can prevent water intrusion during heavy rains or snowstorms common western Wisconsin during fall.

Clear gutters and downspouts of debris to maintain proper drainage and prevent water buildup that could lead to roof leaks or foundation damage. Trim overhanging tree branches to minimize the risk of branches breaking off and causing damage during strong winds. Secure outdoor equipment, signage, and loose items that could become hazardous in severe weather conditions.

Sealing the Gaps

Inspect windows and doors for gaps or cracks that may allow water infiltration or drafts. Seal these openings with weatherstripping or caulking to enhance energy efficiency and protect against water damage. Consider installing storm shutters or protective coverings for windows to reduce the risk of breakage from hail or strong winds.

Ensure exterior doors are equipped with sturdy locks and hinges to withstand high winds and prevent them from being blown open. Reinforce garage doors as needed to safeguard structures and items stored inside from potential damage.

Emergency Preparedness and Safety Measures

Preparing your commercial property for fall storms also involves planning for emergencies and ensuring the safety of occupants:

Review and update your emergency preparedness plan, including evacuation procedures, sheltering options, and communication protocols during severe weather events. Educate employees about emergency procedures and assign specific roles to ensure a coordinated response.

Inspect and test backup generators, sump pumps, and other critical equipment to ensure they are operational. Keep emergency supplies readily accessible, such as flashlights, batteries, first aid kits, and non-perishable food and water, in case of power outages or extended disruptions.

Stay informed about weather forecasts and storm warnings by monitoring updates from local authorities. Rapid changes in weather patterns during the fall months can lead to sudden storms, making it essential to stay vigilant and prepared.

Recovering From Commercial Property Damage Reliably | SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties

2/15/2024 (Permalink)

business man in office talking to female SERVPRO rep SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties is here for your business every step of the way, from ERPs to disaster recovery.

What business owner wakes up one morning determined to suffer through a disaster at work? We would hope no one is thinking or assuming the worst every day!

Unfortunately, disasters happen to businesses across the country every day, so having a plan in place ahead of a fire, flood or storm situation can help you navigate the unknown a bit more smoothly. SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties is here to help you plan, but also here to help you recover from any disaster situation.

Preparing Ahead of the Disaster

The best disaster is the one that didn’t happen, right? In order for that to be true, it’s also important to have a plan in place so you can react immediately when something goes awry. If your team is prepared for what could happen, they are much more likely to respond appropriately.

Once your basic emergency plan is formed, create a clear line of communication so your team knows where information is going to come from and who is in charge of what during an emergency. You should also be taking the time to show your staff where fire extinguishers, water valves and emergency kits are located.

While it may be true that your custodial staff are in charge of responding to situations like this, it is always helpful for your other staff to be able to help in a true emergency situation.

In addition to explaining what should happen before and during a disaster, your team also needs to understand where to go and what to do afterward. Remote work policies need to be in place or an alternate location needs to be secured for your team to continue working in an adjusted way while your repairs are taking place.

Your Personalized Recovery Process

When you have a plan in place and you use it during an emergency, you are much more likely to come out the other side without having to worry about long-term or permanent closures. The faster you can react by calling SERVPRO®, the better your chances will be at a full recovery.

While we work on restoring and repairing your home, you will need to focus on keeping your staff in good spirits while also communicating to the public about your restoration process. Let everyone know how the restoration is coming and offer up tentative re-opening dates to keep people informed throughout the process.

Depending on your type of restoration, you and your team may be able to remain in your building while we work, albeit in an adjusted way. We can oftentimes secure areas or block off sections while we work so you can still operate in an abbreviated capacity during your recovery. We will work with you to find the right balance that you need.

Planning ahead and executing a quick recovery is exactly what your business deserves when it comes to recovering after a disaster. We are here to help you so you can open back up for business faster with a smile on your face!

Have you been wondering why you have seen so many natural disasters on TV lately? You aren’t just seeing things! Natural disasters have slowly been increasing over the last five years. Not only are they happening more frequently, but they are also getting stronger and causing more destruction.

While natural disasters can’t be controlled or prevented, you can be prepared for them when they affect your business.

Creating a plan for how to handle emergencies is crucial! We explain more below about the different reasons why having an emergency plan can help mitigate damage at your business.

When a Plan Is Important

Having a plan is important every day, but especially lately. With the rise in natural disasters, the chance that your business will suffer through some sort of disaster has increased. If you know how to respond ahead of time, you can reduce your risk of extensive damage from situations like floods, strong storms or fire.

Disasters certainly cause extensive physical damage to your property, but they can also lead to serious financial struggles for yourself as well as your employees. Long-term closures can lead to lost revenue and lost wages, but having a recovery plan can help you get back on your feet faster.

Some disaster situations can be severe enough to cause you to close your business while the repairs are taking place. It is also always a possibility that your business will close and never reopen again.

The Benefits of SERVPRO’s Emergency Ready Plan

We have the perfect solution to all of your emergency planning needs! Our Emergency Ready Plan is a comprehensive guide that explains the different threats to your business and how to respond to them when they occur. It can help you keep a clear head and a clear direction as you navigate through a specific disaster.

Our team will assess the different risks that could impact your business, and we will lay out your response to each of them. Your plan will include steps on what to do before, during and after a disaster. Details for planning may include organizing your office to protect important paperwork from water damage, gathering electronics in a certain area that your staff can grab and go in an emergency or determining places to position your fire extinguisher for easy access.

Having a way to communicate with your team during an emergency is also crucial. We will help identify a chain of command that will lay out who is in charge of what during each emergency situation. Having people responsible for certain tasks will ensure your team’s response will go smoothly.

Our Emergency Ready Plan is comprehensive enough to walk you through whatever disaster situation you are faced with. We will help you prepare for and prevent damage, but we are also dedicated to helping you clean up after a disaster event as well. We are always here for you.

Preparing Your Team for Severe Weather Situations | SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Business man holding an umbrella and briefcase with a dark thunderstorm behind him. If your home or business was damaged in a storm, call SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties to get you back in action.

Owning a business is so much more than just providing a service to our community. You are responsible for the daily operations, for the planning for various situations and for keeping your staff safe and happy.

Overcoming regular work-related obstacles and fostering an encouraging environment is something you are used to, but are you preparing for the unexpected in your everyday life? Something like a severe storm or weather emergency could send your staff into a frenzy if they aren’t prepared.

Training and teaching your staff about the different weather situations that could affect them and explaining your emergency response to each can help everyone stay calm and react safely during a true emergency.

Preparing for the Different Risks

We all know that living in the Midwest is quite the experience in terms of weather. We battle through the snowiest and coldest winters, and we hunker down on humid summer days as we watch severe storms and tornadoes roll into town. Because of that, you have to plan for basically every weather scenario!

One example would be to prepare for the risk of flooding, as this could happen as the snow melts in the spring time or any time that heavy rain is forecast. Get the lowest levels of your home ready by removing important documents or fragile things off of the ground, and consider investing in flood insurance for even more security.

Communicating Effectively

Communication is everything nowadays! Thankfully, we are able to connect with one another with a few simple clicks of a mouse or keyboard, which makes it really easy to share information when you need to.

This can include group texts or mass emails about an impending storm, the location of your safe shelter spot or where your nearest emergency kit is located. Any information you can give to your staff will pay off when a true emergency arises.

Planning Your Team’s Response

Once you see a storm or weather situation in the forecast, you have to decide what to do in order to keep everyone safe. You can either evacuate quickly if you have time to get everyone out and home before the weather arises or you can sit tight and wait it out. If you choose to evacuate, your employees need to know how to get out quickly and efficiently. Label your exit points clearly, and go over your evacuation routes during your next training.

If staying put is the safest choice, get your staff to your safe shelter location right away and keep them there for the duration of the storm. Prep this space ahead of time with food, water, an emergency kit and comfort items, and be sure everyone knows how to get to this room without the use of an elevator or escalator.

Practice your team’s response to these different scenarios a few times a year, and you will be ready for any type of weather that comes your way.

Don’t let extreme weather take control! If storms strike your business, SERVPRO® can help you restore your losses.

Document Drying

12/30/2021 (Permalink)

If your business experiences a water damage or flood, what will happen to all of your documents? Many businesses are required to save document for a certain amount of time and these documents tend to be stored in boxes. They are often store in the basement. What happens if these documents end up underwater or at the very least, wet?

Call SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties. We have the solution for your document problem! SERVPRO has some very efficient document drying processes that will save your documents no matter how they’re affected. These processes include sublimation (freeze drying), cleaning, digitization, deodorization and sterilization if mold has occurred.

Sublimation is the process in which a substance is converted directly from a solid to a gas or from a gas to a solid without an intermediate liquid phase. Think of dry ice here. When it is exposed to normal conditions, it will begin to sublimate. It goes directly from a solid form to gaseous form, but is never a liquid.

SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties starts the document handling process by carefully packing your documents and then freezing them. This stabilizes the document and prevents further damage. Once they are frozen, they will be shipped to the SERVPRO headquarters for the professionals there to run them through the Vacuum Freeze Drying Chamber. This is the only method approved by the National Archives and Records Administration and the General Services Administration.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties if you have any questions about document drying or have a water damage and need documents dried! 715-643-7171

Prepare Your Business for Wisconsin Winter Weather

12/28/2021 (Permalink)

We all know how harsh and unforgiving our northern Wisconsin winters can be! We believe the secret to having a safe and enjoyable winter as a business owner is to be well prepared. SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties has some tips to help your Wisconsin business through the winter.

  • Ensure that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order. Regularly replace the batteries. This is especially important if you plan to use a generator.
  • If you don’t already have one, consider buying a generator. Generators can be particularly useful if you have walk in coolers or other types of food storage that require electricity. A generator can also help avoid or minimize commercial property damage due to freezing temperatures.
  • Generously salt your sidewalks prior to, during and after winter storms to prevent slippery situations. Non slip mats can also be helpful in high foot traffic areas. You should also have a plan in place for snow removal from parking lots and sidewalks.
  • To prevent frozen pipes, consider adding foam insulation or heat tape to areas that are not well insulated. Frozen pipes can burst and cause all sorts of damage. Buildings should always be kept at at least 55 degrees.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn & Rusk Counties at 715-643-7171 to get an Emergency Ready Profile started for your business today! We can help you be prepared for any disaster that our Wisconsin winters might bring.

Document Drying for your business

11/6/2018 (Permalink)

If your commercial property or place of business is in the midst of a disaster, who is taking care of your documents?

A lot of times at businesses we are required to save documents for a length of time, and where do those documents tend to get stored? In a basement or box? What if those documents are under water or a fire has occurred, are you just going to through them away?

At SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn, and Rusk counties, we are able to take care of that problem for you. We are able to send these documents off to do what we call document drying. There are many forms of this depending on how your documents are affected. We are able to do freeze drying, cleaning, digitization, deodorization, and sterilize these documents if mold has occurred. With the understanding that not every document will never look the same or new again, we are able to save them so you don’t have to throw them away. Mind you the faster we get to these items the faster we can get them to the proper method to save them and get them stabilized.

So what is your plan for your business, schools, banks, government buildings, and hospitals? Give us a call at 715-643-7171 to see what we can do for you. No worries our corporate SERVPRO where these documents get sent off to are also HIPAA certified, so if you are a hospital or care facility they are safe with us.
